Sisal is a tropical plant. It originated in Mexico, although it is currently cultivated in Brazil, Venezuela, Tanzania, Kenya, Madagascar and other African countries. The fibre is obtained from the leaves of the plant. It is relatively long and gives the paper a high degree of porosity and smoothness. Morphologically, sisal fibre is very similar to that of abaca.
