Hemp is an annual herbaceous plant that originated in central Asia and is considered the oldest of the cultivated plants, since it has been deliberately grown for more than 4000 years. It is currently cultivated in China and the former USSR, but also in Europe, Pakistan, Turkey and Columbia. Hemp fibres are obtained from the stems and are long, strong and opaque. They are very similar to flax fibres, making it morphologically difficult to distinguish between them. Hemp fibre is ideal for making special and technical paper.
