Abaca is a perennial plant with inedible fruit, known as the Philippine banana tree. It is cultivated in the Philippines, Indonesia and tropical America, mainly in Ecuador. Abaca fiber is obtained from the leaves that form the stem of the plant and is characterized by being a long, hard and resistant fiber. In the paper industry it is used mixed with other fibers to increase the strength of the paper or to make low-grammage paper, paper money (as in the case of the yen) and above all, to make porous and resistant paper. Abaca makes it possible to make a very resistant paper, with a silky and translucent touch. If intense refining is done, translucent and parchment-like papers can be obtained. It is a fiber very suitable for doing bulk work.
