Cotton (kg)
Cotton is an annual plant cultivated in warmer areas of the Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe. The main producers are the United States, the former USSR, Brazil, Mexico, Egypt and India, among others. Cotton fibres are extracted from the fluffy bolls covering the seeds. There are two types: long fibres, used in the textile industry and short fibres, known as linters, which are used in paper manufacturing. The linters in turn are divided into two groups, the first cut and second cut. Cotton fibres are rich in cellulose and give the paper durability, strength and opacity. They have traditionally been used for art paper, graphic works and quality printing as well as to make special paper such as banknotes.
